THOMAS MERTON CENTER STATEMENT ON VENEZUELA

The Thomas Merton Center opposes all US
intervention in Venezuela including US military action, covert intelligence
operations, and material support for violent
movements within Venezuela, and the economic
sanctions currently in place.

We understand current US-Venezuela relations
in the historical context of 500 years of colonial
imperialism, more than a century of US covert and
overt military intervention across Latin America
and the Caribbean, and the well-documented mass
violence in the region carried out with the support
of the highest levels of US government throughout
recent decades.
We also recognize the sovereignty of Venezuela and
the rights of Venezuelan people to express criticism
or support of their own government without the
US and other governments using this as justification
for interventions people in the US would not want
directed at our own country.
